EXPLORE THE LOCAL AREA

The serene tranquillity of the Domaine de la Vène is unrivalled in the region, with its peaceful silence being broken by nothing but the harmonious chorus of cicadas during the day and the song of nightingales after dark.

When the sun rises at dawn, revealing rolling hills and forest as far as the eye can see, you could be forgiven for thinking that civilisation is a million miles away. Yet, with the medieval city of Carcassonne so close by, offering vibrant summer festivals, sight-seeing, wine tasting, and great dining, and with the option of day trips to fine beaches and even the Pyrenees, the house is the perfect base to explore this culturally rich region.

Less than an hour from the Mediterranean and sitting in the foothills of the Pyrenees, the Domaine de la Vène is located in one of the most beautiful and authentic regions of France—the Languedoc-Roussillon.

To picture yourself here, you will need to banish clichéd images of the South of France. This is real France, Provence but without the over-commercialised branding and swaths of tourists. And, surrounding the house beyond as far as the eye can see, the Corbières is one of its wildest, most unspoilt areas, despite enjoying all the climatic advantages of the Mediterranean, just like the Riviera.

Recommended Activities

Food & Drink

There is no shortage of food and fantastic cuisine in the Languedoc, this is France after all! Local village bistrots serve hearty and authentic wine and food, including cassoulet, the region’s speciality.

There are also a multitude of higher-end restaurants for a finer dining experience, many within 20 min drive. Most notable is the two-Michelin-starred Restaurant du Parc, located at the foot of the famous Carcassonne citadel, and in the citadel itself is the Hôtel de la Cité and its Barbacane restaurant, which also serves outstanding food.

Slightly further afield is the Auberge du Vieux Puits. Run by Gilles Goujou, the restaurant has three Michelin stars and has been described as displaying some of the most sophisticated cuisine in France.
