Beyond Carcassonne: Villages, Vineyards & Landscapes We Love

Beyond the Walled City

Most visitors to this part of southern France know Carcassonne for its famous medieval citadel, but the wider region beyond the city is what makes a stay at Domaine de la Vène so rewarding.

The Corbières is quieter and less polished than some of the better-known parts of Provence or the Côte d’Azur. Vineyards cover the hillsides, roads wind through tiny villages and dramatic landscapes, and much of the region still feels shaped by local life rather than tourism.

Villages Worth Visiting

The villages scattered across the region are some of the highlights of staying here. Lagrasse, with its abbey, stone bridge, and small independent shops, is one of the most beautiful villages in southern France and makes an ideal destination for a slow afternoon and long lunch.

Minerve offers something very different. Perched above dramatic gorges in the heart of Cathar country, it feels more rugged and atmospheric, particularly outside the busiest summer months.

Many of the smaller villages are best enjoyed without too much planning. Some of the best days begin by driving through the hills and stopping somewhere that looks appealing for coffee or lunch.

Vineyards & Long Lunches

Wine is deeply tied to the landscape here. The Corbières and Minervois regions are home to countless vineyards, from small family-run producers to larger estates offering tastings and tours. A vineyard visit in this part of France rarely feels overly formal. More often, afternoons drift between tastings with conversations outside in the sun and leisurely lunches.

The region is also excellent for food more generally, with markets, bakeries, farm shops, and small restaurants scattered throughout the villages and countryside.

Coast & Countryside

One of the pleasures of staying at Domaine de la Vène is the variety of landscapes within easy reach. The Mediterranean coast can be reached in around an hour, offering everything from long sandy beaches to quieter stretches of shoreline around the Étang de Leucate.

Back inland, the scenery changes quickly from vineyards and olive trees to rocky hills, forest walks, and winding roads through Cathar country. It is a region best explored slowly, without trying to see too much at once.

Returning to the Estate

After time spent visiting markets, villages, or vineyards, there is something particularly enjoyable about returning to the quiet of the estate, opening a bottle of local wine, and settling in for dinner as the sun drops behind the hills.

Domaine de la Vène is perfectly placed for exploring the Corbières, Carcassonne, and the wider Languedoc region.
