Watching the Tour de France from Domaine de la Vène
The Tour de France, one of the world’s most prestigious bicycle races, passes close to us this year during Stage 4, between Carcassonne and Foix. Every year, this thrilling event brings together local communities and cycling fans to cheer on the riders as they pedal through charming villages.
As the route passes directly through the surrounding areas, guests staying at Domaine de la Vène have a front-row seat to one of the world's great sporting events, without any of the logistics of travelling to a major city to watch it.
Where to Watch
This race makes for an exciting morning or afternoon outing. This year, the route takes the cyclists through our local villages of Monze, Pradelles-en-Val, and the beautiful village of Lagrasse. Monze is just a short drive away or a pleasant half-hour walk on a cool morning. Pradelles-en-Val lies a little further along the route, and Lagrasse is about forty minutes by car.
If you haven't visited Lagrasse before, it is worth making the trip, regardless of the race. Recognised as one of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France, the village has a stunning medieval abbey, ancient bridges, and the kind of relaxed atmosphere that is easy to spend a morning in. If you time it right, you can enjoy the spectacle while relaxing in a local café, savoring your morning coffee and a fresh croissant.
What to Expect on the Day
The Tour is as much a spectacle off the bike as on it. Before the riders arrive, the caravane publicitaire rolls through, which features around forty minutes of branded floats, music, and giveaways that signal the race is coming. Then the peloton itself, which passes in a matter of seconds but is genuinely thrilling to witness in person.
For guests who would rather watch from the Domaine, Stage 4 will be broadcast live and the riders' GPS positions are trackable in real time. A long lunch on the terrace with the coverage on in the background is a quieter alternative to soak up the atmosphere and watch the spectacle.
Staying at Domaine de la Vène during the Tour
Domaine de la Vène sleeps up to twenty-two guests across the main house and the Bergerie Cottage, and is available for exclusive hire. The estate sits approximately six kilometres from Carcassonne's start village, close enough to attend the ceremonial departure in the morning, and far enough that you can escape the crowds by lunchtime.
Stage 4 falls on a Tuesday, which makes a stay of around five nights, arriving Saturday 4 July and departing Thursday 9 July, a natural fit.
Availability for that week is limited. If you're interested in spending race week at Domaine de la Vène, we'd love to hear from you.
