The Opportunity
On Tuesday 7 July 2026, Stage 4 of the 113th Tour de France rolls out of Carcassonne. The peloton heads south through the Corbières and into the foothills of the Pyrenees, finishing 182 kilometres later in Foix. It is the first French ville-départ of the 2026 edition, the first time the race has used Carcassonne as a start town since 2022.
Domaine de la Vène sits ten minutes from the medieval Cité, in 630 acres of vineyard, olive grove and lavender. For one week in July, the estate becomes the natural base for a private group who want the spectacle of the Tour, the warmth of the Languedoc, and the privacy of an entire domaine to come home to.

The Domaine sits in the village of Palaja, immediately south of Carcassonne. The Stage 4 route departs the medieval Cité, drops into the Aude valley, and begins its climb towards the Pyrenees within minutes. From the estate, a private transfer to the start village or a vantage point in Carcassonne takes a quarter of an hour.

Sign-on at the start village. The team buses are parked along the boulevards. This is the best window for photos.

Ceremonial départ. The peloton rolls out of Carcassonne behind the race director's car.

Départ Réel. The flag drops a few kilometres outside town. The race is on.

A base, not a basecamp
The Domaine is a 1750s estate set in 630 acres of private land. It has its own swimming pool, a pool house, a cinema room, two kitchens, and eleven bedrooms split across the main house and the adjoining Bergerie cottage. You hire the whole thing; there is no sharing, no other guests, no schedule but yours.
Quiet between the stages
Carcassonne in early July is busy. The Domaine is not. After a morning in the start village, the drive back to Palaja takes ten minutes and ends in vineyards, olive groves, and the kind of silence you can only get in 630 private acres. Browse our gallery for a fuller sense of the estate.
In a region built for cycling
If your group wants to ride before or after the stage, the Domaine is surrounded by the same roads the peloton takes. Local routes through Cazilhac, Mas-des-Cours, and the Montagne Noire are part of why the Tour comes here. Bike storage and route advice available on request.

By car from the Domaine the drive is approximately 6 km, fifteen minutes including parking. We recommend leaving by 09:30 to be settled before the caravane. Private transfers can be arranged.

Roads inside Carcassonne close from early morning. The D104 from Palaja to Carcassonne usually remains open until late morning. Expect detours after 11:00.

The route departs Carcassonne and heads south-east, passing within a few kilometres of the estate as it leaves town. Watching from a roadside vantage in the first 10 km of the stage is straightforward.

Stage 3 finishes in Les Angles on Sunday 5 July, around two hours away. Stage 5 starts in Lannemezan on Wednesday 8 July, around three hours away. A five-night stay covers the build-up, the start, and the recovery.

Booking the Domaine for the week of Stage 4 makes sense beyond the start itself. Stage 3 finishes in the Pyrenees at Les Angles on Sunday 5 July, about two hours' drive from Palaja. Stage 5 starts in Lannemezan on Wednesday 8 July, around three hours away. A five-night stay from 3 to 8 July gives you the build-up, the home start, and the day after.
