THE LANGUEDOC-ROUSSILLON

Explore one of the most beautiful and authentic regions of France

THE LOCAL AREA

Between the mountains and the Mediterranean

Less than an hour from the Mediterranean and sitting in the foothills of the Pyrenees, the Domaine de la Vène feels wonderfully secluded, yet Carcassonne is only 15 minutes away.

From swimming in rivers and exploring medieval villages to cycling through the vineyards, visiting local markets or settling in for a long lunch, the Domaine makes a natural base from which to discover this part of southern France.

15 MINUTES AWAY

Carcassonne and Cathar country

Just 15 minutes away, Carcassonne is home to Europe's largest citadel, a Gallo-Roman UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walk the three kilometres of ramparts into restaurants, cafés and shops, or spend a slower day on a barge along the Canal du Midi. The wider Corbières carries a rich Cathar history, with castle ruins like Quéribus and Montségur still clinging to the cliffs, and abbeys scattered through the hills.

1 HOUR AWAY

The Mediterranean coast

The Mediterranean coast is under an hour away, with vineyards, medieval villages and Cathar castles across the surrounding countryside and the Pyrenees beyond. Closer to home, rivers and natural pools offer wild swimming through the warmer months, while a nearby lake makes for an easy afternoon on the water. The coastline itself moves between sandy beaches, marshlands and rocky outcrops long favoured by painters and poets.

ON THE DOORSTEP

Serenity, with adventure close by

The serene tranquillity of the Domaine is unrivalled in the region, its peaceful silence broken only by cicadas by day and nightingales after dark. At dawn, rolling hills and forest stretch as far as the eye can see - despite Carcassonne's festivals, wine tasting and dining being just minutes away and the wild, unspoilt Corbières enjoys all the climatic advantages of the Mediterranean, without the crowds.

Towns and culture

From medieval villages to lively market towns and the Mediterranean coast, there is plenty to explore beyond Carcassonne, with Minerve, Limoux, Collioure and Toulouse all making excellent day trips from the Domaine. Closer to home, the Festival de Carcassonne fills the city with theatre, opera and music every July.

The surrounding countryside lends itself to days spent outdoors. Walk or cycle through the Domaine’s own 630 acres, go horse riding nearby, play a round at Domaine d’Auriac or head to the Pyrenees for skiing in winter. Watersports, go-karting and tandem skydiving can also be arranged locally.

Lakes, rivers and coastline

There are plenty of places to swim nearby, from the river at Lagrasse and the natural pools at Ribaute to Lac de la Cavayère, which is within walking distance of the Domaine. The Mediterranean coast is under an hour away, with sandy beaches, quieter coves and fresh fish at Biquet Plage in Leucate.
