Beyond Carcassonne, the Languedoc unfolds into hilltop villages, deep gorges and flowery meadows, a coastal château, and a rose-coloured city an hour north, with the Festival de Carcassonne and a quiet museum or two closer to home.
Carcassonne and Cathar country
Our nearest town, Carcassonne, is just 15 minutes away and famous worldwide for its medieval citadel — the largest in Europe. Founded during the Gallo-Roman period, the Cité is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. An afternoon here is a must: walk the three kilometres of ramparts into a centre full of restaurants, cafés and shops, or rent a barge and spend a slower day making your way down the Canal du Midi, one of the oldest man-made waterways in Europe, past bridges and an aqueduct.
The region is also known for its Cathar heritage. The Cathars were part of a Christian movement persecuted by the Catholic Church between the 12th and 14th centuries. Traces of this history remain across the region, from the dramatic hilltop castles of Quéribus and Montségur to abbeys scattered through the surrounding countryside.

A scenic drive through the Minervois, crossing gorges and flowery meadows, ends at Minerve, a small village perched on the cliffs above.

An hour north, the "Ville Rose" takes its name from the pink stone of its buildings, and offers a full day of restaurants, shops and sightseeing.

Home of Blanquette de Limoux, the village holds popular wine-tasting festivals through the summer months.

Culture and events
Festival de Carcassonne
Each July, the Festival de Carcassonne, one of the ten biggest festivals in France, brings theatre, opera, ballet and music to the Medieval City, with around 100 performances across the month. Past line-ups have included Elton John, Supertramp and Sting. Fireworks light up the Cité every 14 July, marking Bastille Day.
Musée des Beaux-Arts
For something quieter, the fine art museum in the centre of Carcassonne is a perfect option for a cultural day trip.
